The Babes Visit Display: Bodega

The Babes took a visit to one of the newest corner pop-up shops in Oak Park, called DISPLAY California. The coolest part about this shop is that it changes displays every couple of months. The concept behind the store is to  incorporate the community, featuring local designers, artisans, merchants, brands, products and ideas from creative individuals in different displays. The current display opened on January 29th and is called “The Bodega”.
As featured on their website, “the Bodega will be the marketplace store with the goal of being a centerpiece for the community to come together…from everyday kitchen items to packaged foods, coffee, and beverages, and household and convenience items. The Bodega will provide high-quality service and food education in an inviting and well-designed space. The Bodega will bring ‘quality to the corner’.”

One of the best parts about DISPLAY is that you can shop retail in-store (35th and Broadway) and online. For more details regarding DISPLAY: The Bodega check them out via InstagramFacebook and their Website.

The Babes found a bunch of items in the Bodega display that we loved, including:

Cask & Barrel: A Feast Made for The Babes

Since they opened in early 2015, Cask & Barrel has been on my “to try” list, so when they invited The Babes in for a bourbon-filled dinner, I was beyond stoked. Just a short bike or Lyft ride off the grid, I am now kicking myself for not making my way there sooner.

The instant reaction with every bite or sip we took was “OH MYYYY, THIS IS SO GOOD.” It came out of our mouths in all caps, I promise.

Bar Manager Ryan’s Kansas City Old Fashioned is to die for. Typically, old fashioneds are too sweet and/or boozey for my taste, but Ryan puts his chemistry background to use here, perfectly melding citrus with bourbon and rye for a finish that goes down smooth.

In addition to cocktails, Cask & Barrel’s copy editor appeasing “Whisk(e)y” list now boasts over 100 types. Our scotch-leaning waiter Nick curated a whisk(e)y flight for us, and managed to convert at least one of The Babes to the scotch side. We tried Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, Willett Pot Still Reserve, Glenkinchie 12-Year-Old Distiller’s Edition Scotch, and Highland Park 12-Year-Old Scotch. Yum!

We were treated to many appetizers (including the adorably plated foie gras corn dogs you see above), which we assumed were dinner until a full spread of smoked, slow cooked meat; a bucket of crispy fried chicken; cornbread with ham hock butter (regular butter will never sate me again); mac & cheese; and a salad topped with cheddar cheese bread pudding croutons and apple pie vinaigrette (among other things) arrived.

After we’d digested for a bit, dessert appeared. We managed to make room in our stomachs for it, though we devoured it too quickly to photograph. The chocolate fried pie, which is derived from a 200-year-old recipe, is drizzled with salted duck fat caramel and indulgently decadent. It was so delicious the only thing my blown away brain could say, repeatedly, was “WHAT IS UP WITH THIS PIE?!?” Again, it came out of my mouth in all caps.

We heard word there is a whiskey waffle in the works for brunch, so you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be back for that, not to mention happy hour and many a friend, family, or date night.

Put a Cantaloupe on it. Our sweet affair with rye.

What do you do when it’s 100˚+ ? Make deliciously refreshing cocktails!

Place your large ice cube in a glass of your choice. Pour 1.5 ounces of Redemption Rye to begin the refreshing cocktail creation process. Chop up some cantaloupe in small cubes and toss them in the rye so they start soaking up the goods! Fill your glass with Angry Orchard apple ginger cider and stir away with a Whiskey Wood stirring stick (adds a nice smoky flavor!). Slice up a cute decorative piece of cantaloupe for the edge of the glass/extra snack. Cut a tiny slice in the fruity side of your sliced cantaloupe decoration and slide on edge of glass. Enjoy!

*pro tip – you can use your stirring stick to skewer the cubed cantaloupe out for an additional whiskey-soaked snack!

As true whiskey fans, we enjoy drinking rye whiskey almost as much as bourbon. Our loyalty to bourbon runs through and through, but there’s nothing wrong with branching out every once in a while!

Glasses Up, Irish True: Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey Tasting!

My stomach churned with excitement as I entered the doors of Pour House for my first official whiskey tasting. Pour House is a familiar place for evening activities for me. However, this time, I took in a big gulp of air once I was inside. Both of us a little nervous about what to do, my fellow Bourbon Babe and I slowly walked our way through the tables to a gal in the back of the room near a sign that read “Tullamore D.E.W.”.

 We shyly asked her if this was the whiskey tasting event and, with a bubbly Irish accent, she exclaimed, “Why yes!” A native Irish citizen, this cheery whiskey fanatic was the West Coast ambassador for the label Tullamore D.E.W. and our hostess for the evening.

 She went on to share that the Tullamore D.E.W. distillery was founded in 1829, in a central Ireland town called Tullamore. One of the distillery family members, Daniel E. Williams, was responsible for bringing to the distillery the new “flavor” of mixing malted and unmalted barley together, branding Tullamore to be what it is today. As you can see in the name, Tullamore D.E.W. kept Daniel’s initials (D.E.W.). Remaining true to the dedication and flavor profiles Daniel brought to his Irish whiskey has made Tullamore D.E.W. the second largest Irish whiskey brand in the world today!

At our whiskey tasting we got to try four labels. Below we give you the run-down of the different varietals and a brief description of the flavors. You can find Tullamore D.E.W. at most BevMos, ranging in price from $24 to $65 per bottle.

Tullamore D.E.W. Tasting

Original Tullamore D.E.W. Irish Whiskey*

  • Flavors: citrus, green apple, spice, vanilla, marzipan, buttery
  • Notes: The spice comes from mixing barley and unmalted barley together

*Bourbon Babes’ favorite!

 Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Special Reserve

  • Flavors: red wine, nuttiness, spice, sherry, chocolate, praline, marzipan
  • Notes: This special reserve spends a portion of its life in a bourbon oak barrel and then in a sherry barrel

Tullamore D.E.W. 10 Year Single Malt

  • Flavors: earthiness, tropical fruits, pineapple, freshly cut grass, toasted wood, apricots, Christmas cake
  • Notes: This malt is fermented with actual pineapple chunks to bring out its sweet flavors

 Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix

  • Flavors: toffee, malty, leafy, vanilla, caramel sweetness, floral, oak tannins, oloroso sherry, spicy
  • Note: This is their featured Irish whiskey and it  explodes in your mouth! It will likely only be available until summer 2015 as it is a limited batch, so get it before it’s gone!

Bourbon & Friendship

Often times, I think of my life as a continuous pattern of repeated steps.

The alarm goes off.

My feet touch the cool, wood floor.

I slip on my slacks and blouse.

The bitter coffee brews.

I pedal to work.

And so the day begins…again.

But when I stop and think about the bigger scheme of things, every choice I make has the potential to be a repeated pattern:

Do I buy the same lunch meat as last week?

Do I take the same route to the dentist or the hair salon?

Do I watch the same TV shows?

Do I run the same path I traversed yesterday?

Do I date the same type of guy, who says the same things, and ends up leaving me for the same reasons? (Because we know how well that always works out.)

What makes decision-making easy is allowing ourselves to continue to choose the same options, to make the same choices, and to live repeatable and patterned lives. When decision-making is hard, however, we are challenged. We are challenged to choose differently from our otherwise constant pattern. The reality of the matter is that with every choice comes an opportunity.

You may be wondering: Who is this gal, rambling on about patterns, choices, and opportunity? Well, I am a normal 20-something who was given an opportunity at friendship. And, if it weren’t for an old friend of mine who reached out to me after several years apart, and who chose to invite me to a “Bourbon Babes Meeting” over six months ago, I would not be where I am today. And for that, I am forever thankful.

Bourbon Tasting

Now, you might be wondering: I really just want to know more about the Bourbon Babes! Well, the Bourbon Babes are a group of seven lady friends, who get together once a month to taste a new bourbon. The Babes came to be when a few of the ladies discovered their mutual love of bourbon and desire to branch out their palates.

Each meeting is started with a cheers and a ring-around the circle, where every Babe shares what they are most excited about that month, as well as any “bourbon experiences” they’ve had since the last meeting. Then, the tasting experience begins and the bourbon selection of the month is paired with different treats and documented with tasting notes.

Eats and Drinks

Although the bourbon part was enticing enough on its own, the best part about coming to my first Bourbon Babes Meeting was the opportunity for me to get to know the Babes. While I had met and hung out with these ladies before, I was now given the opportunity to share my life and experiences with these women, who have since become my really great gal pals.

Our friendship is deeper than bourbon. Scratch that. Rather, bourbon is at the heart of our friendship. The delicious corn mash may have brought us all together but I think we all share one big thing in common: We are all opportunists. We each, individually, look for opportunities in our lives. Where the artistic, fashionable, quirky, fun-loving, vintage, earthy, and humorous perspectives often times challenge the daily status quo, we choose to put on the gloves and accept challenges as opportunities. My fellow Babes have taught me that friendships should be invigorating; friendships should ground you in reflecting on your patterned life, just as much as they inspire you to take the opportunity, to choose differently, and to live every day fully.

The Bourbon Babes friendship consists of many wonderful things, and here are a few:

The big takeaway? What is it all worth if you don’t have awesome friendships to inspire you to live fully? Life may always present itself as a continuous pattern of repeated choices, but you can challenge yourself to look for opportunities. Be a fellow babe to your friends. And most importantly, drink bourbon.
