The Babes Visit El Rey on K

The Babes love cocktails. Clinking glasses with friends is that much sweeter with a side of fizz and fruit.

When we hit the streets of midtown Sacramento, we often find ourselves drawn to premium cocktail locales, whether it be our steadfast whiskey pub or the ascending hip foodie scene where we can enjoy a refreshing squeeze paired with a splash of bourbon.

This week, the Babes joined fellow Sactown friends at a special preview of El Rey on K — the newest taqueria in town, bringing gourmet street tacos and homemade salsa to 7th and K Street in downtown Sacramento.

We were delighted with the entire cocktail list, but here are 3 cocktails you must try on your first trip into this cheerful cantina.

The Babes’ faves at El Rey:

  • Black Cadillac: made with whiskey, this juicy beverage is a whiskey-lovers answer to a margarita
  • Piña del Oro: this mezcal cocktail packs a sweet and smoky punch that even scotch aficionados can appreciate
  • Clean Laundry: this mint and cucumber beverage is a simple, refreshing alternative to a traditional mint julep

The name “El Rey” (meaning “The King” in Spanish) is a clever nod to its co-owner Kenny Thomas, former Kings player. Not to mention the restaurant is just steps away from the new Golden One Center, the new home of the Sacramento Kings.

Even at the preview event, Sacramento’s #1 Kings fan and champion of the new arena made an appearance, Mayor Kevin Johnson, himself.

The El Rey tagline “Long Live the King” brings positive energy in revitalizing K Street and welcoming home the Sacramento Kings to downtown.

A few other standout details:

  • Check out the vertical succulent garden on the entrance of the restaurant, which spells out “El Rey”
  • The bright print on the booths is perfect for a drink selfie (see photo above)
  • Their selection of salsas is extensive (9!) and delicious
  • TWO staffed bars means less time waiting for your precious cocktails

The official opening of El Rey was August 31st at 11am. Stop in for tacos, salsa, and a cocktail of your choice!

Cookies & Milk features Bourbon Cookie

The Babes had a blast collaborating with the local delivery services, Cookies & Milk. This late night cookie delivery service provides delicious home-made cookies for the Greater Sacramento Area at a less than 45 minute delivery turn-around time. When it is late and you don’t have the supplies or effort to make cookies of your own, these are the guys to call up! They are open:

Hours: Thursday 7 PM-12:30 AM, Fri-Sat 7 PM-1 AM, & Sunday 6 PM-12 AM

The Bourbon Babes thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with the Founders of Cookies & Milk, Nick and Will. We started our collaboration, with a cheers of Lexington Bourbon, and sharing recent bourbon experiences and exciting things that each of us are stoked for (just like our regular Bourbon Babe meetings!).

We then got into our bake-off, with two teams, competing to make the best cookie! The winning cookie is the featured cookie for this next weekend (starting Thursday, May 5). So the battle was one. The two teams, Team Awesome & Team Awesomer, had a blast with different bourbon products, pouring bourbon into the cookie dough, preparing a bourbon reduction with cinnamon and sugar, and using Whistle Pig barrel-aged maple syrup.

Bourbon Apple Cooler, anyone?

Even though we are not in the depths of summer, we declare it time to start busting out the coolers and fruity cocktails!

If you haven’t tried a iced drink with fruit, it is simply refreshing all  you need is a good cooler from the best coolers and ice chests you can get online. Just like sangria or a berry mojito, bourbon cocktails can be light and refreshing with fruit on top!

Here is our recipe for an Apple Cooler:

– fill a shaker half with ice

– pour in 3 shots of Maker’s Mark bourbon

– fill the rest of the shaker with apple juice

– shake and strain into two glasses

– add a few drops of lemon bitters and a bourbon-soaked cherry

– add your favorite apple slices to the drink

-serve chilled!

The beautiful blend of bourbon, apple and bitters keeps this drink light and not too sweet! Hope you enjoy our very own Apple Cooler some time this summer!
